The purpose of this article was to publish the results of a study on people with A1C levels greater than 7.5. The researchers found that higher the A1C levels correlate with lower cognitive testing scores. They go on to state that further testing needs to be done in order to find out if lowering A1c levels will improve cognitive abilities. They also state that there could be a correlation between brain insulin action and dementia. Basically, less insulin action in the brain is recorded in people with dementia.
Based on complexity of the article, the audience is composed of other scientist that are educated in endocrinology. I hard a hard time understanding some of the article because of this.
The main rhetorical appeal used was definitely ethos. I'm not sure if logos was used because it isn't necessarily logical that diabetes can lead to cognitive impairment or dementia. If one knew a lot about diabetes, then maybe it would be logical that diabetes correlates with cognitive impairment.
The media used is digital and the mode is text-based.
The design is very minimalist. It is a scientific article, so it is fitting that it is very unaesthetic and to the point.
I think that this piece could easily be turned into a graph showing the correlation between glucose levels and cognitive scores.
