Skiing Twitter Story

I thought Shannon Seaman's twitter story about her skiing trip with her partner was very engaging. The main reason that I liked it was because it was humorous, and it wasn't too long. Also, I thought that the slang that she used added to the humor of the piece by creating a playful style and tone. The story relies heavily on the rhetorical appeal, pathos. This is appeal is clearly played on because the story is embarrassing in a humorous way, and makes you sympathize for the main character because she was not good at skiing, which is really hard to do. I also thought that the fact that she had two characters and compared their skill in skiing was a good choice. It helped me understand that she felt that she was the only one that was bad at skiing, which probably made her feel worse that day. I also liked that she gave more than one example of her falling down because it shows that it wasn't just a one time event, and she even states that she was so bad at skiing that she had to just leave her partner on the slopes because she kept knocking them over. This is what really made me feel bad for her because I can relate to not excelling at a sport and just having to give up at it. However, it is also humorous because you can picture the misadventure she had that day, which she probably hated then but looks on fondly now. One other little thing that I liked is the fact that she included that this is a true story that happened to her. There is something about true stories that make them more engaging than fiction. As my english teacher stated in class, "truth is stranger than fiction."
